For this issue, we asked media scholar Natalie Krikowa to share her top reading recommendations on activism on social media. A lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney, Krikowa researches and teaches in digital and social media with expertise in media representation including identity politics in screen studies and popular culture. She recently presented her work on hashtag activism in LGBTIQ fan communities at the Hashtag Activism Seminar held by Information Innovation at UTS.

Her presentation involved looking at the impact of the hashtag #LGBTFansDeserveBetter had on the television industry and how social media can create real social change.

You can follow her on twitter @nataliekrikowa and check out more of her research here.

Her 5 choices all present important discussions on the move of activism to online spaces and the impact that this has had mainly for feminist discourse and for minorities.
